Promoting British Values at The Butterfly Preschool
The DFE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”. The government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 prevent strategy, and these values have been reiterated in 2014.
At The Butterfly Preschool we understand that society we live in is diverse and therefore, our curriculum and life within school reflects this. For our children, we aim to continually weave the thread of social, cultural, moral and spiritual British Values throughout day to day nursery life. We endeavour to support our children through the EYFS by providing playful learning opportunities to help them develop positive British Values set out by the government.
Democracy - Making decisions together
As part of the focus on self-confidence and self-awareness as cited in Personal, social and emotional development; managers and staff can encourage children to see their role in the bigger picture, whether that is helping us make the rules of the nursery, valuing each others views, talking about their feelings and making sure that each child is listened to by an adult.
Staff can also support the decision that children make and provide activities that involve turn-taking, sharing and collaboration. We give children the opportunity to develop enquiring minds in an atmosphere where questions are valued.
The rule of the law - Understanding that rules matter
We consistently reinforce our high expectation of children. Children are taught the value and reasons behind our expectations (rules) that they are there to protect us, that everyone has a responsibility and that there are consequences when rules are broken. As part of the focus on managing feeling and behaviour within PSED staff ensure that children understand their own and others behaviour as well as collaborate with children to create rules and the code of behaviour.
Individual Liberty - Freedom for all At
The Butterfly Preschool, our children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. We educated and provide boundaries for our pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and empowering teaching. As part of self-confidence & self-awareness in PSED children should develop a positive sense of themselves, we give them opportunities to take risks and understand their own self knowledge of certain topics. As part of people & communities in Understanding the world we encourage children to explore the language of feeling and responsibility in group discussion time.
Mutual Respect and tolerance - Treat others as you want to be treated
Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an affect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the preschool community treat each other with respect. Our school promise chart in the nursery promote respect for others and this is reiterated through our classroom and learning rules, as well as our behaviour policy. Through our themes staff create an ethos of inclusivity and tolerance where views, faiths, cultures and races are valued and children are engaged with the wider community.
British Traditions and Heritage
We celebrate the role of Britain both historically and in the present. We want children to have the knowledge of and be proud of their British Heritage and the cultural and historical traditions that we are renowned for. This involves celebrating Royal events, remembrance day, festivals such as Christmas and Easter.
